Syracuse University News Above Christie Whitman (left) administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), made a stop at Syracuse University after taking a boat tour of Onondaga Lake July 8, 2002. Whitman was accompanied to SU by U.S. Rep. James Walsh (second from left), who oversees the EPA budget as chairman of the House's VA, HUD and Independent Agencies subcommittee. At SU, Whitman met with Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw and scientists working on the development of SU's Center of Excellence in Environmental Systems, a public-private research and economic development effort. Whitman and Walsh toured environmental laboratories on the fourth floor of Link Hall and discussed the University's role in becoming a leading center of research for indoor environmental quality. Above, University Professor Charles T. Driscoll (right), one of the nation's leading acid-rain researchers and an expert on mercury in the environment, talks to Whitman about his plan for establishing a network of robotic monitoring buoys in the Seneca River, as well as Skaneateles, Otisco and Onondaga lakes.
